Armed North Highlands man surrenders to deputies after high-speed chase

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An armed man who took police on a high-speed chase through Carmichael surrendered following several hours of convincing by crisis negotiators Tuesday, Sacramento authorities said.

Officials with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office say 37-year-old Alejandro Garcia of North Highlands returned to his ex-girlfriend’s home with a gun after physically assaulting her. The woman had previously called for help, however, Garcia had fled before deputies could get there, and fled the residence again as the woman called for help when he returned with a gun.

Garcia was spotted by a Star Helicopter that alerted North Patrol units to his location, who attempted to make a stop on his vehicle. Garcia then led deputies on a high-speed chase through the Carmichael area, gaining speeds of up to 90 MPH.

Garcia would later high-center his vehicle on a median in the intersection of Grant Avenue and Fair Oaks Blvd, refusing to get out of the car. The Sheriff’s Crisis Intervention Negotiation Team and the Special Enforcement Detail were called to the scene, speaking with Garcia for several hours, successfully convincing him to get out of the vehicle and surrender.

Multiple firearms were located in Garcia’s vehicle, and he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on eight felony charges with a bail of $150,000. Online records show he’s since been released. Garcia was previously arrested in 2007 for possession of narcotics and dangerous weapons.

In a news release, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office thanked various state and local law enforcement agencies for their assistance in the incident.

“The Sheriff’s Office is grateful for the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Sacramento Police Department, Elk Grove Police Department and Folsom Police Department,” the release read.
